Nmea UDP crashes qtVLM on startup if AIS is turned on

Running on RPi 32bit .  qtVLM crashes on startup if nmea connect at startup turned on.

if using just TCP it throws error but not fatal to do with failing to connect to AIS.

if using UDP it’s fatal.

if AIS is turned off at startup, it’s ok and will start (even with UDP) .  Turning on AIS later is ok, just not at startup with UDP.

wifi network, using YDEN NMEA gateway (wired into boat network ) via RJ45 not using YDEN wifi.
